Pqluglist- Web Server

Well I had an interesting night on Tuesday. I was adding the O"Reilly graphic &
link to the PQLUG web site using a banner module, and the second I clicked
'save' the web site went down. I figured it was a coincidence so I waited a
while then e-mailed the techs at Canadian Web Hosting. I was able to, just
barely, SSH into the server and while I was on I got messaged asking what I was
doing because I was using 98% of the CPU and ALL the web sites on that server
were down.

It ended up that they had to reboot the server four times and they disabled
pqlug.org and the database it uses. I suggested that I update to the latest
TikiWiki which they thought would work. So I downloaded that and rsynced it up
to the server, ran the upgrade which went fine, and as soon as I hit OK to
restart the web site the server crashed again.

By this time it was around 2 AM so the techs who were probably expecting a quiet
night shift were not very happy. They sent me their logs and it looked like the
banner I had created in Tiki was in a very fast loop asking for the O'Reilly
image over and over. Well I talked the techs into letting me back into the
database and I manually removed anything to do with the banner and tried the web
site again. This time no problem.

So, from about 6:30 PM to about 3:30 AM the next day all of the web sites on
that server (about 40) were either down completely or very very slow.

I added the graphic and link using regular HTML and I probably won't be touching
the Tiki banner module for a very long time.

Alfred
